Abram Church History

A Guide to the Church of St John, the Evangelist, Abram Wigan

Created to celebrate the 70th Anniversary of the Consecration of the present church 30th January 2007.

In 2007 we celebrated 70 years since the consecration of the present church of St John the Evangelist Abram  Wigan. Most of this information is taken straight from a guide written in 1990; some new items and details have been added of the Service of Consecration which took place in 1937.

The things you see in the church are part of our history and life; they are aids to worship and life ………  but the most important ‘items’ in the church are the people and the person of Jesus Christ. The church is more than the building - it is the people who make up the Body of Jesus Christ here on earth; we are a worshipping community which seeks to serve God in our daily lives. We meet in this place to worship, to have fun,    to celebrate and to grieve; in this place we meet with the living God.

We are not perfect people! However, we are a people who want to grow in faith and in love. We know God’s forgiveness and God’s love for us.

Amongst us are those who care for the churchyard; who prepare for the Services; who clean the church; who provide music; who teach the children; who visit the sick; who attend to the business of the church; who take Holy Communion to people in hospital and in their homes; who preach and lead us in worship; who care and love; who keep the finances; who provide food and refreshments; who take part in Services; who organise; who care for the fabric of the church; who provide the Magazine; who give of their time; who welcome people as they enter the church; who sing; who pray; who give their money; who make wonderful banners; who lead and make decisions; …… and other service I may have forgotten!  All done, we pray, as part of our relationship with God in Jesus Christ.

Join with me as we give thanks to God for God’s faithfulness to us and as we commit ourselves to the present and the future life of our church.
